This GPDocs module provides guidance to help you complete an RNZCGP Cornerstone CQI project.

It includes information to help you:

  • plan your project and have it approved by an RNZCGP-endorsed assessor
  • carry out a full cycle of planning, test your process, then study and act on the results
  • write a Cornerstone CQI project report.

What is Continuous Quality Improvement?

Continuous Quality Improvement is a deliberate process of continually evaluating, and working to make things better.

CQI recognises that most problems are related to processes – the way things are done. Following a CQI mindset means every member of the team continuously reflects on what they do and how it can be done better.

Even small changes can lead to big improvements.

What is needed for a Cornerstone CQI project?

A Cornerstone CQI project is an initiative that aims to address a specific problem facing the practice.

It follows a structured process that can be repeated over and over to create ongoing improvement over time. Ideally, it generates improved health outcomes for a significant number of people.

Your CQI project must meet all the requirements of the RNZCGP Cornerstone CQI module.

There are three parts to a Cornerstone CQI project:

  1. Planning – Carry out initial planning and have it approved by an RNZCGP-endorsed assessor.
  2. Doing – Once approved, carry out a full cycle of your chosen methodology.
  3. Writing – A CQI project report.

The information in this module is written to follow a Plan, Do, Study, Act (PDSA) methodology, most commonly used for a quality improvement project. However, the guidance can be applied to other methodologies.
